I just love a good ol' DIY

Ol' Bettie DIY

Welcome DIY friends. This is a place where I come to share my creativity and learning process of my own DIY projects whether it be a full remodel of a room in my house to creating a piece of decor out of repurposed materials I literally pulled out of the trash; see my Dumpster DIY page. I believe that when we bring our visions of design and decor into the spaces around us, it can offer positive energy and of course a unique, lived in environment, even if it means we have to do all the dirty work to get it there. I crave a home DIY project where I bring my corky ideas to a modern design. I love giving new new life to vintage piece of furniture. I love repurposing materials by saving them from landfills, not to mention saving some money while I'm at it. Lastly, I love looking around at my home knowing I created these custom spaces all by myself. I believe everyone has a DIY bone in them, and we should always challenge ourselves to do something scary like tear down a wall or install a light fixture.  I invite you to explore my projects big or small, simple or time consuming, free or budget friendly, I have it all.

This charming living room space in a vintage home is the perfect setting for mid century modern furniture and decor.

Furniture Refinishing

Giving vintage a second chance

I started with a simple 1950's high boy and lowboy dresser set which had a light beige shiny veneer finish with minimal damage. I refinished the vintage duo thinking I would take them to my new home to use, but instead sold them to a lovely individual on marketplace. Experiencing the excitement they had expressed over the work I had done to these two dressers was far more superior than the extra cash I made off of this DIY furniture project. I was instantly hooked. I love giving new life to anything from vanities, desks, sideboards, chairs, mirrors and the list goes on.

Home DIY

How would you transform this room?

I have purchased a charming 1935 semi-bungalow home which requires a lot of work yet has loads of character and potential, and giving it a new life has been my obsession for 2 years now. Here I will share my room renovations and makeovers that I have accomplished to date. Many are unfinished but still worth following along for! My goal for my home DIY projects is preserving as much character as possible while introducing a modern twist. My decor direction too is a mix of modern and mid century modern as most of my furniture pieces are thrifted items I have scored and of course put a little bit of work into.

Repurposing

How many projects can I make out of trash?

If I can save even a buck on DIY materials, I am here for it and definitely up for the challenge of making trash look good. I love knowing that I have saved materials from the landfill and repurposed it into some pretty cool decor items for my home. Reused material can have its downfalls such as damage, limited amounts or dimensions, it can be dirty, hard to clean or sand, but I promise you, the extra work offers that much more satisfaction when you see the before and afters.
